To broaden the global perspectives of elite marine science students and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills and comprehensive practical abilities, the Chongben College has meticulously designed the North Atlantic Program. Ten selected students will embark on an integrated study tour to the United Kingdom from February 14 to 23, 2025. The program will be led by college administrators Chi Xin and Meng Jingjing.
1. Field Internship: Exploring the Mysteries of Nature
During this study period, the project team conducted field internships at Seven Sister Cliff, Stonehenge, and West Runton Beach. At the Seven Sister Cliff, students personally experienced the magnificent coastline of the Cretaceous Cliff, observed the unique geological structure, and gained a deep understanding of its formation process and geological changes; At Stonehenge, students experience the incredible craftsmanship of nature and remain steadfast in their pursuit of mysteries; At West Runton Beach, students conducted detailed research on the ecological environment of the beach under the guidance of their overseas mentor Thomas Mock, observing the living habits of intertidal organisms and analyzing the characteristics of marine ecosystems. Through on-site investigation and recording, students not only mastered the methods and skills of field research, but also gained a more intuitive and profound understanding of marine ecology and geological evolution.
2. Visiting for academic exchange: experiencing the charm of academia
The project team visited several internationally renowned universities and research institutes, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, University College London, and the University of East Anglia in the UK. At the University of Cambridge, students stroll through the ancient campus, visiting renowned colleges such as King's College and Trinity College, experiencing their profound academic heritage, boating on the River Cambridge, and experiencing their centuries old historical and cultural heritage. Oxford University is the oldest university in the English speaking world, with a library, Christ Church College, All Souls College... Students have walked the path of sages, had conversations with great scientists from afar, and through visiting and studying, learned about the school's teaching mode, research achievements, and application process. At University College London, students first listened to Professor Ted Johnson's lecture The Mathematics of Nonlinear Waves in the Ocean: Outflows and Internal Solitary Waves in the Mathematics Department, further understanding the applicability of mathematics in the ocean. Then, under the guidance of Professor Christian Boehmer, the head of the department, they clarified the research direction, faculty strength, and application process of the Mathematics Department; Later, under the guidance of Teacher Zheng Heran, the students went to visit the Bartlett School of Architecture; Finally, the students visited the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Led by doctoral students in the laboratory, they learned about the use of experimental equipment such as wave makers and wind tunnels, and discussed experimental procedures and software usage based on their own experimental experience. The University of East Anglia is a strategic partner of our university. Here, students listened to Professor Marie Fanny Racault's lecture on Roles of viruses in the ocean, learned about pathogens and their roles, functions, applications, etc. in the ocean, visited the Air Sea Ice Chamber laboratory, and had discussions with senior students who were sent through cooperation agreements to jointly train and pursue doctoral degrees. They listened to foreign scientific research and life experiences, broadened their academic horizons, and provided direction for future academic planning.
3. Museum Tourism:Tracing History and Culture
The British Museum, the British Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery, and the Maritime Museum have all left footprints of research teams. At the British Museum, students appreciate precious artifacts from around the world, ranging from ancient Egyptian mummies to exquisite Greek statues, to gain a deeper understanding of the development of human civilization. At the Natural History Museum in the UK, students, led by Dr. Oliver, delved into the museum's internal laboratory, observed a rich collection of marine specimens up close, and learned about the stories behind them; Through the collection of animal and plant specimens and fossils, we explored the diversity and evolutionary processes of Earth's biodiversity. The art treasures displayed in the National Art Museum allow students to appreciate the artistic styles of different periods and the creative charm of artists. The Maritime Museum showcases the maritime history and maritime culture of the UK, allowing students to experience the significant impact of the ocean on human development.
4. Cross-cultural Experience: Integrating into Local Life
During the study period, students deeply experienced the unique British cultural environment. Taste English breakfast, learn about English dining culture, and experience the cultural connotations behind table manners. In London, students visit iconic buildings such as Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth Tower, and The Shard, experiencing the unique charm of blending history and modernity. The communication and interaction with local residents have enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of British social life and customs, enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills.
